To give a little bit of inside baseball on this series, let me explain the purpose of the JACKL Inc. Research Lab. Which is a label that isn't in the book verbatim but clearly has a purpose in the first and last books of the series—JACKL Inc. and Thrice Charmed.
Jeremiah and Alyssa have always been curious about the origins of their powers, and it wasn't until they encountered a Yoda-like dryad faerie in Familiar Fairytales that they learned they shared a Fae heritage. The story plays out in that book through the family's relocation from the Willamette Valley in Oregon to Serra Bay, California. (Serra Bay being my fictionalized name for the San Diego metropolitan area)
There, they meet Sammi, a naiad, aka a mermaid, who looks after the harbor at Serra Bay. Through Sammi, they are introduced to Kevin, the head Fae of the region, and tell him they want to help with the regression of magic and the population of faeries in their new adopted home.
One of the peculiarities of the Fae is that they are aeternal (or eternal, I like the weird spellings sometimes) and don't die. Which is disconcerting to their mundane neighbors who have turned their backs on magic. So they end up doing something they call "recycling"-purposefully changing their mundane appearance (or mask) and assuming a new personality.
But, as with most magic, it sometimes doesn't work, and fae creatures can be trapped in a new mundane appearance and never fully regain their Fae powers without a boost of magic to help them reboot.
How are we doing? Clear as mud?
One of the research tasks that Alyssa took on was finding a way to detect these trapped fae and reboot them responsibly. For this, she gathers her team from the younger generation of the Jackson clan.
Leah takes the lead in applying technology and science to the task. Megan heads their arcane documents and artifact library. Shannon works as a research analyst, and Naomi applies her halfling powers as a field researcher.
There is a lot more around this idea, and Alyssa's team plays a vital role in finding a powerful trapped fae that they reboot — but that's the story in Once Bitten.
